The benefit of taking any diabetes or other medication is to help you control your disease or condition. Regardless of the medication, however, you must also work to control your glucose levels. Taking a pill or injecting insulin or a non-insulin injectable does not miraculously control your glucose. Some people can control their diabetes without any medication. Others need to take a pill, a combination of pills or even a combination of pills and insulin. Others need to take insulin or a non-insulin injectable. Discuss the alternatives and the reasons why you are being asked to take certain medications. Be involved in your diabetes care and you will be in the best control—it’s your life. Don’t wait until a complication such as burning or numbness in your feet arises before you take your diabetes seriously.
