My name is Marci Sloane and I am a registered and licensed dietitian and certified diabetes educator. I never thought I’d go back to school for a second career when I was 34 years old. Sure, I could have thought about it for 4 ½ years. Instead, I chose to just do it, I did it, and I love it. My first career was in media production and although it was a lot of fun, for me, it didn’t compare to how I feel when I am given the opportunity to help people help themselves.
I remember my first moment in the spotlight. I was asked to speak to a local group about diabetes. There were about 50 attendees, however, there could have been five million. I was so nervous to be speaking in pubic about a topic I was new to. This speaking engagement occurred during the first few months after becoming a registered dietitian and while I was still becoming familiar with discussing the challenges of taking care of diabetes.
That moment happened 17 years ago and today I am elated to have opportunities to speak to 5 or 500 or more people and share the information I have grown so passionate about. I provide very practical information as I walk my listeners through their day with diabetes, heart disease, digestive issues, healthy and balanced eating and many other nutrition-related conditions or illnesses. I thrive in the moment.
Most often I speak to laypeople at local communities, in clubhouses, libraries, hospitals, temples, churches, independent living facilities, etc. I also speak to healthcare professionals; have been interviewed on the radio and television. It seems like I have joined both careers: media and healthcare. Please see below for some public speaking I have done.
